Therapy at the Boscawen Location: What to Expect: Traditional Therapy Is Always an Option Choosing the Boscawen location does not mean that you are signing up for equine-assisted psychotherapy. The Boscawen location includes a private office space where traditional talk therapy can take place just as it would in a conventional counseling office. You may choose Boscawen because you prefer the location, the environment, or simply because it works best with your schedule. You are not expected to participate in equine-assisted or outdoor therapy simply because you are meeting with me at the farm. Equine-Assisted and Nature-Based Work Is Optional For clients who are interested, the Boscawen location also creates opportunities to incorporate nature, movement, mindfulness, and equines into the therapeutic process. These approaches may be incorporated when they are clinically appropriate and when they fit your treatment goals, preferences, and readiness. Equine-assisted or nature-based work is not automatically part of every session. Some clients may choose to incorporate these approaches regularly, while others may use them occasionally or not at all. Your therapy may remain entirely within the office. As your therapist, I may also suggest an experiential, nature-based, or equine-assisted approach when I believe it may support your treatment goals. Any decision to incorporate these approaches will be discussed with you, and participation is always voluntary. What Is Different About Experiential Therapy? Traditional talk therapy often centers on sitting together and talking through thoughts, feelings, relationships, and experiences. Experiential approaches can be different. Rather than only talking *about* an experience, we may slow down and notice what is happening in the moment—through your thoughts, emotions, body, surroundings, movement, or interactions with an equine. Because of this, the pace of an experiential session may feel different from a traditional office session. There may be more quiet, observation, mindfulness, movement, or time spent allowing an experience to unfold before putting it into words. A session may feel slower or less structured while still providing meaningful therapeutic work. There is no expectation that you need to "do something" with a horse or have a particular experience. Sometimes the most meaningful part of a session is simply noticing what happens within you as you are present in a different environment. You Don't Have to Decide Right Away You do not need to know whether equine-assisted or nature-based therapy is right for you before beginning therapy at Boscawen. We can start with traditional talk therapy and explore other approaches only if and when they feel appropriate.
